The Celtic Knot is one of the best known motifs in Celtic jewellery and art. The delicate twists and turns are found in ancient stone art and tattoos, in illuminated manuscripts- in fact, just about anywhere the Celtic people have travelled. Similar designs exist in Norse culture, and as far as China.
Many people find Celtic knots mysterious and beautiful, but few know the true meaning of the Celtic knots they wear. The knots originated in the 3rd and 4th B.C. and were used to denote faith, declare love and unity and protect against evil spirits. They also represent infinity and eternity because Celtic knots do not contain beginnings or ends. Two of the most commonly recognized knots are the Celtic cross and the Trinity Knot. The Celtic cross is a religious symbol that signifies different things, depending on the religion. In ancient times, the circle may have referenced the sun god.
Irish Catholics believe the circle around the head of the cross signifies God’s eternal love. What we know for sure is that the Celtic cross has travelled through time and across many religions to become a worldwide symbol. Two Celtic knots are said to signify love, including the Love Knot and the Sailor’s Knot, and the meaning of these Celtic knots is essentially the same. The designs, however, are very different. The love knot is comprised of several intertwining loops that do not begin or end, and it is typically formed into a ring to symbolize eternal love.
The Sailor’s Knot is comprised of two ropes that are intricately woven together to create endless loops. These were woven by Celtic sailors in memory of the loves ones they left behind. These knots signify eternal love that will never break because these knots are the most durable of all the Celtic knots.
